Stacked rocks on Jeju Island

These rocks are not pots but they inspire me to make pots. These are from Jeju Island in the East China Sea, where I would sit and watch the ocean and rocks and rot away. I hope that you enjoy them!

Ahh.. The spring firing is history! It was a good firing that went smoothly. There was a problem with a primary air brick that got left open at the end. The results were some extra crusty ash on some pieces. Extra crusty ash means extra work cleaning pots... uggghhh. Won't make that mistake again!! New mistakes for sure... but not that one.
I got 9600 pounds of clay delivered on Wednesday. That is all inside now, just sitting there staring at me. I feel like I'm about 300 years old now that the clay is moved.
I have a commission to make some large pots for the next firing. I like making large pots, so this is definitely a good thing.
The trivets for placing the pots worked brilliantly, they look like they could be reusable which is something that was hoped for, but not really counted on.

Here are a few pots from the Spring 2008 firing. The nice oranges are starting to show up with the blues!

Here are two pots that I grabbed out from a new shelf that I put in the corner of the firebox. The kiln is still at about 200F, but hey sometimes thats the way it is.

Placing trivets for woodfiring

Here is a picture of some trivets that I pressmolded out of some wadding. I use them to place cups and small bowls. They really help when loading the kiln. A rather long process that I didn't look forward to, now rockets right along.

The formula for the wadding is:

Fireclay 50%
Silica sand 35%

Alumina Hydrate 15%

I use coarse fireclay, Hawthorn Bond if I have it.
